On December 8th, 1919, the Morning Post published that Hugh Tylesman's family was killed when a fire engulfed their Bayswater house overlooking Bannicker Park. The dead include Eloise Tylesman, his wife, Oliver and Howard Tylesman, his sons, and Katherine MacKenna, a servant. The fire looked to have started in the bedroom of the two boys.

6 months later, on Thursday July 15th, 1920, The Daily Mail published an article about Hugh Tylesman's attack on Edward Gavigan. Tylesman entered the Diamondback Club on Tottenham Court Road and called out Gavigan's name before firing on him. Tylesman missed and was injured in the scuffle to restrain him. The police report he was acting erratically and had to be sedated once in custody.

At the same time he was charged with the shooting, Tylesman was also charged with vandalizing the Sudan Memorial in Bannicker Park, Bayswater with a hammer.
